The Connections Project 2022
A Mosaic of The Keys
400 6”x 6” blank canvases are distributed throughout the keys to both artist and community members to create their own piece of art. This project is organized by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts.
What a great way to start the new year with a painting that supports the Grants Program for Artists. This Mosaic Show starts in Key Largo and travels south to Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine and Key West. It starts on January 31, 2022 and ends in Key West on May 10, 2022.

What to do?
One has to consider the receiver of a small canvas and how would it best represent the Mosaic. With this in mind a small canvas in among 399 others would need to be simple. How can I make this simple, interesting and in someway the recipient would enjoy? The idea came as a simple still-life, not very busy but something with interest.
The bottle was purchased in the keys and lemons can be found everywhere. The color of turquoise blue in the bottle with a contrasting yellow lemon seems to have the subtle opposition with plenty of space for the background. Would I be able to capture the translucent lemon sitting behind the glass bottle? So, a simple sketch started the process.
The block-in is where one starts to observe the larger sections of color and starts to establish the lights and darks in a painting. Once the big areas are blocked-in, the process moves to the smaller details. Moving from one area to another. Capturing the translucent image inside the bottle is the trick as there is a distortion that takes place.
In order to ground this painting the cast shadows are put in with the detail to replicate the colors in the shadow that are gliding along the surface.

One never tires of painting and observing the beauty in the Florida Keys!

Now that the piece is completed, it has been turned back to “The Connections Project 2022”, and will be on the journey to travel with the show. By May someone will have this in their possession. It is my hope that this painting finds a home where it can be a good memory in coming together for a good cause.
